New Kent Falcons’ varsity peewee and varsity midget teams dominated opponents last Saturday to cruise into the playoff championships of their respective divisions in the Metropolitan Youth Football League.

Evan Branch’s 70-yard opening kickoff return put the peewees (age 9) in front to stay on the way to a 26-20 conquest of Parham’s Bears in last Saturday’s semifinal. Branch then ran 68 yards for another score and Wyatt Terry and Dominique Akrie-Williams added respective TD runs of 4 and 7 yards to stake New Kent to a 26-7 halftime bulge.

The victory was New Kent’s seventh straight, upping the peewees’ record to 9-1. The triumph also followed a 13-7 come from behind upset of the defending champs, Western’s Wildcats, in the opening round. Earlier, the peewees topped King William 45-26 at homecoming and blanked Charles City 40-0 to close the regular season.

The peewees, coached by Jamie Terry, take on Varina’s Blue Devils in the 12 noon Saturday title game at Dorey Park.

The Falcon midgets (age 11-12) unleashed a stifling defense to crush Mechanicsville’s Rebels 20-0 in Saturday’s semifinals. New Kent has won seven in a row, including a 14-6 first round playoff win over East End’s Tigers. They also pummeled King William 47-20 at homecoming and shut out Charles City 29-0.

Coached by Big John McCauley and Vince Farkas, the midgets battle Chamberlayne for the title Saturday with kickoff set for 10:30 a.m. at Dorey Park.
