Tabb second half run denies Lady Trojan victory bid

Tabb’s invading Tigers embarked on an 18-0 run to overcome a New Kent Lady Trojan halftime lead and put the game out of reach on the way to a 43-25 Bay Rivers District basketball win.

The May 4 outcome denied the Lady Trojans their first win and dropped the hosts to 0-2 on the season.

“We’ve got to learn to put two halves together,” first year Lady Trojan head coach Lauren Davis said afterward. “In the first half, we moved the ball well. But in the second, they went on a run and we’ve got to learn to stop those runs and have runs of our own.”

Neither team lit up the scoreboard in a turnover-plagued first half, but New Kent managed a bit of breathing room on Adrianne Goodlet’s buzzer-beating three that opened a 16-12 advantage at the break.

Sarah Barnett’s steal and length of the court drive for a lay-in opened the third quarter scoring, stretching the hosts’ lead to 18-12. But over the next seven minutes, New Kent went 0-for-7 from the floor while turning the ball over nine times.

Tabb, meanwhile, sank 7 of 11 shots from the floor in opening a 30-18 advantage. Kandra Taylor’s basket in the lane broke New Kent’s scoreless streak with 7:40 left in the game, but the hosts could never reduce the deficit to single digits.

Goodlet led New Kent with eight points while Alexis Newbill finished with four. Taylor, Barnett, Ta’racya Winston, Raven Randall, Rachel Baldwin, and Sarah Crumbly managed two apiece while Alexis Elliot tossed in one.

“We’re a young team, but we’re going to have to be able to finish,” Davis said. “We’ll be fine. We’ve just got to put a whole basketball game together.”
