New Kent edges Lafayette in boys’ track
New Kent’s boys won nine events and amassed 147 points to edge Lafayette (139) in their track and field season opener. Five Group A teams competed in the March 17 meet at New Kent. Charles City scored 55 points followed by Middlesex (46), Mathews (29), Essex (27), and King William (12). Cory Dunn and Ryan Coles emerged as double individual event winners for the hosts. Charles City pitcher Roger Williams tossed a no-hitter while striking out 12 and helped his own cause at the plate with a solo homer and ground rule double as the Panthers downed King & Queen’s visiting Tigers 11-1. NK School Board members adopt budget with job cuts
A near empty auditorium befuddled the handful of New Kent residents who attended Monday’s School Board public hearing and vote on schools’ $23.9 million budget for the next fiscal year. Due to an ongoing economic crisis, the budget is $2 million below the current year’s $25.9 million figure and features 29.5 job cuts, including 17.5 teachers, and no employee pay raises. A converted garage/outbuilding overflows with clothing, shoes, books, household and electronic goods, and other donated items. Outside are more racks filled with clothes. A mat placed on the ground nearby is covered with toys. CC schools exploring bus route revamp to address shortfall
Charles City County school officials must whittle another $183,000 off next year’s anticipated expense line in order to balance expected revenue in the next fiscal year’s budget. And to do so, a two-tier bus schedule plus pay cuts for bus drivers, teacher aides, and cafeteria workers are up front for consideration. Heading into last Thursday’s budget work session, county School Board members knew they faced closing a $575,000 gap between their $12 million 2010-11 budget passed last month and an estimated revenue figure of just under $11.5 million. CC proposing 4-cent tax hike to fund $21 million budget
A 4-cent real estate tax increase along with a proposed $21 million budget in Charles City is headed to public hearing before the county’s Board of Supervisors. During their March 23 meeting, board members authorized advertising the proposals in local newspapers. A public hearing on the tax increase is set for April 19, 7 p.m. in the county government building. Tax cut, extra school money in NK’s future?
New Kent County school employees and taxpayers could use a little good news in a time of economic troubles. Yesterday, they got some. Revenue appears to be outpacing expenses by almost $2.3 million, based on preliminary figures County Administrator Cabell Lawton presented to Board of Supervisors members during Thursday’s work session. Thus, an additional $1.1 million allocation for county schools tops a list of Lawton’s recommendations on how supervisors can use the money. On the path to what would be their first Group AA state basketball title, New Kent’s Trojans encountered a 6-foot-11 roadblock in the form of Cave Spring center Josh Henderson. New Kent’s Trojans used an 8-0 run to distance themselves from Western Albemarle’s Region II champion Warriors in the fourth quarter of their Group AA Division 3 state basketball quarterfinal contest on the floor of James Madison University’s Convocation Center in Harrisonburg.
