Burrell chooses not to seek 7th term to New Kent board of supervisors
James “Jimmy” Burrell, the District 3 supervisor of New Kent County, has announced that he will not seek re-election and will end his tenure on the county’s board of supervisors at the conclusion of the year. Burrell will have served 24 consecutive years on the board upon the conclusion of his current term.
“I felt it was time to move on,” said the 76-year old representative. “I believe that New Kent is in good hands with whoever is elected to represent District 3, as well as those who will serve on the board in years to come.”
Burrell begin his tenure in 1991 and became one of the first African-American chairmen for the board, a post he was honored to hold.
“I held that post six times,” he continued. “It was something that I was serious about and wanted to make sure I did what was best for New Kent citizens.”
Three other African-Americans served on the board prior to Burrell. But Burrell’s distinction is that his 24-year tenure was longer than the other three combined.
“I just want to thank citizens for their support over the years,” he concluded.
