Lack of energy, coach John Scorsone said, played a significant role in his New Kent Lady Trojans falling 55-24 to Warhill’s invading Lions. But Warhill’s 1-3-1 zone defense did its part in forging the outcome.

The Lion zone forced the Lady Trojans to set up their half-court offense too far from the basket. The result: 13 one shot and done first half possessions and no offensive rebounds. In the end, the hosts dipped to 1-10 in Bay Rivers District basketball and 2-12 overall.

“We had no energy,” Scorsone said after the Jan. 15 affair. “When you’ve got no energy, you can’t do anything.

“It seemed like we played in slow motion,” he said. “We were not attacking and we couldn’t put the ball in the basket. Playing without passion and without heart is unacceptable.”

New Kent never led in the contest. The hosts managed to tie at 8-8 on a Paige Simpson three with 3:10 to go in the opening period, but the Lions scored the next 16 points to assume control. Simpson’s trey became one of only three field goals New Kent sank before the break.

Adrienne Goodlet’s 10 points led New Kent. Karley Allen finished with five followed by Simpson’s four, Anna Mathis’ three, and Kirsten Gipson’s two.
