With the Bottoms Bridge area of New Kent booming with new businesses including proposals for Advanced Auto Parts and Waffle House, the diversity of attractions has made it a place for patrons to partake in a variety of services. But now, there may be a service that could occupy the area that could be both beneficial and life-saving for citizens in New Kent, Charles City, and adjacent counties.

County Administrator Rodney Hathaway confirmed the possibility of a medical facility in Quinton. And while those talks are in the very early stages of development, he indicated the exciting possibilities to improve healthcare for county residents.

“The proposal is currently going through a variety of public hearings being hosted by the Virginia Health Commission (VHC),” Hathaway said. “Their next one is July 29 and I know it is becoming a topic of discussion that is gaining steam.”

The proposed medical facility would be a free-standing Level 2 Trauma Center. A Level 2 designation indicates that the building would have the capability of executing a lot of tasks that many hospitals do, including conducting surgeries.

“Right now, the closest Level 2 Trauma Center is a half-hour away,” continued the county administrator. “As you look at our health district, it runs as far as Short Pump. The VHC is looking at the feasibility of a facility in our area and I believe New Kent is under serious consideration as a location if plans do go forward.”

Hathaway also commented about the Level 1 Trauma Center, indicating MCV hospital is the only one he can think of off the top of his head.

“There is still a lot of work and a long process before a decision is made,” Hathaway added. “But I’m sure that New Kent has all the accommodations to be a home for such a facility.”
