VDOT offers tips to address drainage issues
Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) is providing recommendations and answers to drainage problems in Charles City and New Kent due to recent amount of rainfall.
More than 400 calls within the last month have entered the office regarding drainage issues. While VDOT is working to prevent road flooding by keeping state-owned drainage systems maintained and clear of debris, they are encouraging citizens to play roles to prevent blockages.
VDOT regularly maintains state-owned drainage facilities on roadways by removing buildup and debris from ditches and gutters, cleaning inlets and sewer pipes, replacing damaged sewer pipes and culverts, and performing inspections on stormwater management facilities annually and fixing problems.
VDOT reminds property owners that they are responsible for maintenance of drainage facilities such as ditches and channels that are not part of VDOT-owned easements or a city/county easement. Property owners are responsible for keeping storm water free-flowing through their land by keeping grass clippings, leaves, and other debris from accumulating.
