Letter to the Editor: Says Gardner is his choice for New Kent sheriff

My writing today is meant to clear up some confusion that is occurring in New Kent County.

In recent letters regarding the sheriff’s election, I have seen such statements such as “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and “let’s keep things the way they are.” I felt an obligation to inform voters that this is simply not the current scenario for the sheriff’s election.

Sheriff F.W. “Wakie” Howard Jr. is retiring and not seeking reelection. We have Chief Deputy J. Joseph McLaughlin Jr. and Captain Charles Gardner from within the sheriff’s office, both whom are seeking election as sheriff. Both are independents and not endorsed by political parties.

In sticking with facts, the man I have chosen to support began his law enforcement career as a military police officer and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He came to New Kent to raise a family with his wife Rhonda. After being hired by New Kent Sheriff’s Office, he was sent to Crater Criminal Justice Training Academy and graduated as a police office. He worked his way up from patrol deputy to his current position, serving New Kent for over 21 years.

His fairness and approach-ability will lead us forward in New Kent. Being a police officer is about being fair, impartial, and compassionate. This man is Captain Charles Gardner and I encourage you to vote for him on Nov. 3.
