New Kent’s Lady Trojans shut out West Point’s visiting Pointers in the first quarter on the way to a 41-20 non-district basketball triumph.
The Lady Trojans led 10-0 after one period in the Feb. 2 affair and held a 19-7 advantage at the half. West Point reduced the deficit to 10 in the third quarter and trailed 25-14 heading into the final period. A 7-0 New Kent run to start the fourth put the contest out of reach.
“It was a nice win, although we couldn’t get the ball in the hole sometimes,” said Lady Trojan coach John Scorsone after his team improved to 5-13.
“West Point was missing some of their girls so they were shorthanded, and we were, too,” he said pointing to the absence of Lady Trojan forwards Karley Allen and Becky Anderson. Two players, Caitlin McClain and Kayla Davis, were brought up from JV to fill gaps in New Kent’s roster.
New Kent’s defense, meanwhile, limited West Point to five field goals for the game.
“They missed some easy baskets, and we missed a lot, too,” said Scorsone.
New Kent’s Adrienne Goodlet matched West Point’s offensive production with a game-high 20 points. Paige Simpson finished with nine followed by three each from Davis, Kirsten Gipson, and Anna Mathis, Mikayla Scorsone’s two, and McClain’s one.
