Scoring early and often, New Kent’s Lady Trojans staged a dominating first half performance to easily turn back Park View-South Hill’s visiting Dragons in a soccer contest shortened by the slaughter rule.
By halftime, the Lady Trojans owned a 6-0 advantage. Two goals past the midpoint of the second half ended the affair with 13 minutes to go, handing the hosts an 8-0 victory to even their record at 3-3.
New Kent coach Irene Bierie said the one-sided affair came as welcome relief.
“Especially after last Friday, that was good,” she added.
“We lost [at Tabb] by the slaughter rule, not that it feels good to do that to another team,” she said.
New Kent opened the scoring five minutes into the match. Striker Jhonae White picked off a Dragon goal kick, dribbled past defenders, and pounded a shot past Dragon keeper Jasmine Francis.
Four minutes later, Faith Tyler took a pass from Hannah Gilland for a shot from the right side that eluded Francis. Then it was Zoe Wallace’s turn as she beat Francis to a Sydney Griffith corner kick for a goal from point-blank range.
The hosts recorded three goals over the final 8:30 on the half. Kristen Taylor’s corner kick to White resulted in White’s long-range shot from the left side finding the net, off the outstretched hands of a leaping Francis. Gilland then looped a towering shot over Francis with two minutes to go followed by Maggie Jarvis’ shot off a Taylor corner kick with less than 10 seconds to play before the break.
Haley Grisbaum, normally the sweeper on defense, got into the scoring act with a shot over Francis with 17 minutes to play. Sara Ward ended the affair with a long shot from the right side.
New Kent owned a 24-1 shot advantage. Francis managed 10 saves while Lady Trojan keepers Sara Buchanan (first half) and Talia Hohman (second half) did not have to stop any Park View shots.
Assessing her team’s effort, Bierie said, “Overall, it wasn’t great. We kind of dropped down to [Park View’s] level more than I’d hoped for. Hopefully, we’ll have more intensity tomorrow [at home against Bruton].”
