Temple Vaiden Pomfrey

Temple Vaiden Pomfrey, a lifelong resident of New Kent, passed away on May 9, 2016, at the age of 98.
Temple and his twin sister, Thelma were born on March 3, 1918 to Simon Augustus and Mary Williams Pomfrey. His older brother, Russell, and sister, Laura, completed the family whose heritage has been centered in New Kent for generations.
In 1947, he married Mary Julia Thompson and celebrated their 64th anniversary before her death in 2011.
Temple joined the Army in 1942 and served under General Patton in the 10th Armored Division which marched with the Allies across Europe. Temple had a long career at the state highway department in Richmond and retired in 1983.
He was the happiest working in his garden at home in the country.
Mr. Pomfrey is survived by his three daughters, Catherine, Margaret, and Mary Ann; son-in-law, Larry Casey; two step-grandchildren and spouses and two step-great-grandchildren. His time on earth has been enriched by the love of a close family that includes many devoted nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 11, 11 a.m., at Sandston Baptist Church, 100 W. Williamsburg Road, Sandston. The family welcomed visitors an hour prior to service at the church. Interment followed at 1 p.m. in the New Kent Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery. Vincent Funeral Home handled arrangements.
