Heavy rain from a passing thunderstorm cancelled the boys’ half of New Kent’s soccer doubleheader with visiting West Point, but bad weather failed to deny victory for the Lady Trojans.
Before the storm cut short Friday’s second half, the Lady Trojans punched in a pair of first half goals. The result officially went into the books as a 2-0 New Kent win.
New Kent dominated from the start, taking 17 first half shots to the Pointers’ two. Fifteen minutes in, the hosts broke the scoreless deadlock when Zoe Wallace emerged from a collision with Pointer keeper Daniela Gonzalez to roll a shot into an unprotected net. Six minutes later, Kristen Taylor drove past a defender for a sliding shot that eluded a lunging Gonzalez.
West Point had opportunities to get back in the contest, but Lindsey Williams’ penalty kick with 17 minutes left in the half sailed over the goal. Then three minutes before the break, Lady Trojan keeper Talia Hohman stopped Williams’ direct free kick.
Hohman totaled two saves for the hosts. Gonzalez managed a dozen saves.
