First Dogwood Classic runs April 6, features tailgate contest
The inaugural running of the Dogwood Classic at Colonial Downs takes place Saturday, April 6. Tailgate areas open at 9 a.m. with the first steeplechase horse race set for 1 p.m.
Tailgaters have a chance to win prizes based on how creative they can get with the event theme, “The Wild, Wild West.” There are five different categories that attendees can participate in, headlined by the “Best Tailgate Party” (based on the theme) competition. Judging will be conducted by Dogwood Classic “Master of Ceremonies” Jack Lauterback of 103.7 The River, and seven members of the Richmond Lady Raiders Dance Squad. The top three tailgates will be awarded prizes. The other categories include Best Dressed (male and female), Best Dressed (based on theme – male and female), Best Ladies Hat, and Best Boots. Winners will be announced after the fourth race at 3:30 p.m.
There are three Dogwood Classic ticket options available. Reserved vehicle tailgate spaces along the rail are on sale at www.dogwoodclassic.com. There is also a general vehicle tailgate area outside the first turn where cars enter on a first come, first serve basis. General parking passes, that allow vehicles access to the main Colonial Downs paved parking lot, can also be purchased. All three options include Dogwood Classic admission for all passengers.
