Burglarizing former Charles City workplace nets man three-year prison term

A man who burglarized his former place of employment and eluded police while out on bond will spend the next three years in prison.

Treveon Dolen Clemons, 27, of the 4500 block of Marlin Avenue, Suffolk, accepted a plea agreement and entered guilty pleas to one count each of burglary, grand theft auto, felony failure to appear, and misdemeanor driving suspended (third or subsequent offense) during Dec. 16 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. One charge each of grand larceny, possession of burglary tools, felony failure to appear, misdemeanor destruction of property, and misdemeanor contempt of court were dropped.

In a summary of evidence provided by Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler, around 11 p.m. on Nov. 25, 2015, the owner of a business located in the Roxbury Industrial Park returned from a job and spotted a van backed up inside the building. An individual who was inside quickly escaped as the owner entered the facility. As the owner was inspecting his property, the individual, later identified as Clemons, advised the owner that he should “get out of here.” The owner walked away towards the road and as he called 9-1-1, a white jeep that was driven by the owner flashed by and onto the highway in the direction of Interstate 64.

Police received the call and located the vehicle that had crashed. Officers patrolled Interstate 64 when they noticed a vehicle on the side with a woman inside. The woman indicated she was waiting for her boyfriend who allegedly broke down on the highway. Officers monitored the car and saw Clemons emerge from a wooded area and enter the vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated and the defendant was taken into custody. The defendant bonded out of jail but failed to appear for a June 17, 2016 trial. He was later located in Northern Virginia and arrested.

Under the plea agreement, Clemons received a 10-year sentence with seven years suspended (three to serve) on the burglary charge. All 10 years on the grand theft auto charge were suspended. He will serve one month each on the felony failure to appear charge and misdemeanor driving suspended charge. He must also pay $222 in restitution for damage caused to the jeep.

In an unrelated case, a Charles City woman will spend a day in jail as part of an accepted plea agreement.

Cordaysia L. Robinson, 25, of the 17500 block of John Tyler Memorial Highway, entered a guilty plea to an amended charge of trespassing (originally breaking and entering). One charge of misdemeanor destruction of property was dropped.

In a summary of evidence, on Feb. 7, 2016, Robinson and another co-defendant, Ebony Coles, went to the home of Coles’ ex-boyfriend without permission. Robinson admitted to being on the property without the permission of the owner.

Under the agreement, she received a 12-month sentence with all suspended but one day.
