New Kent Historical Society is sponsoring a photo contest for “Neglected Old Buildings” in New Kent County that provide a “look back in time.”

In the past, these buildings were the mainstay of our community. Today, they add that old rustic beauty and charm to the countryside. If you have a “Neglected Old Building” on your property, in the neighborhood, or just around the county, consider submitting a photo.

Basic contest rules:

1. The building must be old, empty, neglected, and located in New Kent.

2. Photo cannot be older than 2011.

3. List Building Location (Example: Lanexa near Waterside Drive).

4. State something you may know about the building (Example: Was used a church around 1925).

5. Provide your name, address, email info.

6. No professional studio or touch up photos will be accepted.

7. No more than 3 photos per person.

Photos will be judged on visual appearance, image quality, portrayal of the buildings originality and the photographers’ creativity. You are not allowed to add a different background.

The picture must be taken in the building’s natural surroundings. All entries and locations will be validated by the judges to be an original portrait. All photos become the property of the New Kent Historical Society. All entries will be on display at the New Kent County Fair in September.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes to the lucky winners. The deadline to submit entries is June 30. Please e-mail all photos to NKHSEmail@gmail.com.
