Savage paces NK runners

Approaching the finish line, New Kent’s Austin Savage sprints past Peninsula Catholic’s Phillip Harpen to take top honors at the Oct. 3 meet.

Austin Savage raced past Peninsula Catholic’s Phillip Harpen in the final stretch to place first individually and help New Kent post cross-country victories over two non-district opponents.

Savage crossed the finish line on New Kent’s 3.1-mile course in 17:24, one second ahead of Harpen in the Oct. 3 meet. New Kent scored 23 points to Peninsula Catholic’s 36. In head-to-head competition with Benedictine, New Kent won 15-50.

On the girls’ side, Peninsula Catholic runners took the top three places on the way to downing New Kent 20-35. Danielle Holzhauser place fourth overall for New Kent in 24:25.
