New veterans’ group looks to assist active families in New Kent

When Al Lambiase moved to Lanexa 12 years ago, he searched for an organization that related to his background as a military veteran. Unable to find one, he pondered the idea of creating a group based out of New Kent. Now, Lambiase is looking to build on the former dream with local community support.

Lambiase founded New Kent County Vets and Patriots in April of this year. His goal is to bring together veterans and supporters from both the military and first responders to support those currently operating in their respective fields.

“You don’t have to be a military veteran to join or participate,” Lambiase said in an Oct. 11 telephone interview. “Anyone who wants to support our troops or first responders can join.”

Lambiase said the idea lingered with him since relocating to New Kent. After serving 26 years in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Reserves, he wanted to form a group to support families of those who serve the country and citizens.

“When an active duty troop, male or female, is deployed for service, the family is left with basic challenges,” Lambiase commented. “The parent who remains at home has tasks to do such as shopping, cutting grass, providing transportation for kids, and other things.

“We hope that this organization will assist with things the other spouse would be doing if they would be there,” he added. “Down the road I’d like to see something along those lines.”

Lambiase’s first meeting yielded a group of ten. According to Lambiase, those ten have been faithful with interaction being a focal point to expand the group’s goals.

“This is a brand new organization and we are brand new to the community,” the veteran said. “There are several people currently in the group with different backgrounds, different experiences, and their insight and ideas are wonderful.”

With ten minds brainstorming, the group planned its first function; an upcoming Children’s Jamboree that will take place on Oct. 28 at Providence Forge Recreation Center.

“We want to show the children how much we appreciate them,” Lambiase said. “They are making as much a sacrifice as those who are deployed.”

The veteran emphasized that first responders and public safety officials are also welcomed to join the group.

“Police officers and first responders put their lives on the line every day,” Lambiase added. “They don’t have a routine schedule and they are always on call for us. We thank them for that.”

Lambiase is hoping the Children’s Jamboree will be the starting point for growth for the organization.

“We aren’t limiting who joins this group,” he said. “If you are a veteran of the military or public service, or if you are a person who just loves them, we want you to join.”

The Children’s Jamboree will take place on Oct. 28, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Lambiase said a RSVP is requested by Oct. 20 so enough items can be in place, but he also wants the public to embrace the group’s goals.

“We are looking for sponsors, new members, and volunteers,” he said. “We want to make this event a success.”
