Interstate to close in NK for test

Virginia’s Interstate 64 emergency lane reversal plan will be tested later this month in the Richmond area.

Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) says the eastbound lanes will be closed on July 21 from 4:30-7 a.m. between exit 205 (Bottoms Bridge/Quinton) and Exit 231 near Williamsburg.

The New Kent rest area on eastbound I-64 also will be closed, along with the on and off ramps at exits 211 (Talleysville), 214 (Providence Forge), 220 (West Point), and 227 (Toano).

Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto U.S. Route 60.

CC Sheriff’s Office warns of scam

Charles City Sheriff’s Office is advising residents of a scam distributed by mail throughout the county.

A county citizen brought to a letter to the sheriff’s office of the scam from The National Lottery. The letter mails a resident a check in the amount of $3,750 with instructions to deposit the check into a bank account. The letter continues by requesting the money through Western Union in the amount of $2,620 in order to claim a grand prize of $150,000.

The sheriff’s office advises residents not to fall victim of the scam and encourages each individual to disregard and destroy the letter.. A copy of the letter and check can be viewed on the organization’s Facebook page or by contacting the office.

Arrests made by NK Sheriff’s Office

New Kent Sheriff’s office have arrested individuals in relation to incidents during the July 4th holiday weekend:

Russell Christopher Edwards, 32, of 227 N. Linden Avenue, Highland Springs, was arrested on one count each of burglary and grand larceny. Edwards allegedly burglarized a home on Roxbury Road on July 5 and stole fishing poles. He was being held without bond.

Brian Chandler Gregory, 33, of 1625 Quaker Road, Quinton, was arrested on one count each of felony assault on a police officer, misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm, and violation of the county’s noise ordinance. A police report says gunshots were heard on July 5 in a neighborhood on Quaker Road. When deputies arrived, another shot was heard and Gregory was identified as the alleged suspect and taken into custody. Upon transport, Gregory allegedly assaulted deputy Wyatt Johnston. He was being held on a $2,000 bond.

Alan Gindero Shamberger, 32, of 7411 Olivet Church Road, New Kent, on one count of domestic assault (third offense). Shamberger allegedly was the physical aggressor during a July 6 domestic dispute. He was being held without bond.
