Editorial: Family outings can be as simple as going to a community event

Living in a community like Charles City or New Kent, the growth of the counties relies heavily on the citizens of the county. As a firm believer of giving back to the community, a simple family outing can benefit the community we live in.

Last Saturday, I attended the Holly Fork Hoedown as part of my job. At the same time, I was accompanied by my sister and my nephew who was excited about going to the pumpkin patch. What started out as a normal job assignment for me turned into an outing. Pictures were taken for publication in the Chronicle, my nephew explored the corn maze (four times), and my sister was able to take home two pumpkins and two hot dog combos for under twenty dollars.

While enjoying that Saturday, we were able to support a local business. We didn’t stay at the hoedown all day, but you can tell people enjoyed the atmosphere. A lot of local businesses, churches, and other organizations host events that are open to the public (especially during the fall season). There are plenty to choose from in the Charles City and New Kent area with a lot of hidden gyms.

Using these festivals can bond family members, especially in an age that only see family outings occur during vacations or dining out to eat. Staying local has its perks. Where else can you take a 20-minute drive from home, listen to some music, grab some food, and not spend a boatload of money? These events usually offer items to buy and ask for donations, but taking time to attend them is just a sample of appreciation and support for your local community event. Vendors are also present and offer custom crafts and artwork, offering the opportunity to meet and interact with talented people of the community.

So, if you want to enjoy some quality family time without the hassle of interstate traffic or massive crowds, try a local event or restaurant. They’ll appreciate your support and you’ll benefit from bonding with loved ones.
