More money removed from schools by CC supervisors

Apparently a $20,000 message from Charles City’s Board of Supervisors wasn’t stern enough for the Charles City school system.

Supervisors elected to remove $86,150 from the schools during its Sept. 4 work session. In total, more than $100,000 has been removed from the schools 2013-14 budget.

During board directives, District 2 representative Bill Coada addressed his colleagues about comments made by the school’s interim finance director David Papenfuse at the Aug. 20 school board meeting.

“The interim finance director made a recommendation to the school board to take $22,000 to conduct a study,” said Coada. “The $86,150 was specifically designated for schools to replace the HVAC unit in the cafeteria.”

The district 2 supervisor continued, commenting on the schools need for the funds to replace the unit. Expectations were for the unit to be replaced during the summer while students were not in the building.

“If they were to replace it now, it would shut down the schools,” continued Coada. “It will take weeks to replace.”

After a brief discussion, supervisors unanimously approved the removal of the funds 3-0.
