Jamestown’s Lady Eagles dominated New Kent Lady’s Trojans in their first encounter of the season. However, an ample opportunity presented to the hosting Lady Trojans primed them for a chance to better position themselves for a postseason run. They didn’t squander that opportunity.

With two Jamestown starters and head coach suspended, New Kent pulled off a 51-44 upset over the Bay Rivers District top team Lady Eagles on Jan. 29.

Lady Trojan Madison Foley scorched the scoreboard early, scoring the team’s first seven points on three field goals. Along with pressure defense and holding Jamestown without a field goal in the first quarter, New Kent carried a 12-4 lead into the second frame.

But Jamestown began to press the Lady Trojans, forcing a plethora of turnovers on half-court traps. New Kent’s Brynne Jones’ six points in the quarter were enough to keep the hosts ahead by two heading into halftime (21-19).

Jones’ offense powered the Lady Trojans after the halftime break. The forward added 10 points in the scoring column, part of the team’s 24 in the third to jump out to a huge lead that would be too much for the visitors to overcome.

After the contest is over, Lady Trojan head coach Neko Burson expressed pleasure that his team’s growth over the season paid off against Jamestown.

“Tonight, we put it all together and played a tough game,” the victorious coach said. “These young ladies deserved it.

“We move the ball tonight and Jamestown had some issues on their side,” Burson continued. “But on one felt sorry when we had those types of things going on. We did a great job playing who was in front of us and putting the overall game plan together.”

Jones scored a game high 19 points to lead all scorers in the game as New Kent improves to 6-10. Foley finished with 11, Haley Hyndshaw added nine points, Peyton Slater tossed in eight, Jada Hooker scored three, and Bailee Hellebrandt chipped in with one.

Jamestown’s Annette O’Leary led the team in scoring with 17 points.
