Unique quilt depicting New Kent history to be raffled

The quilt, constructed by the New Kent Quilters and donated in conjunction with New Kent Historical Society, is displayed at the New Kent County fair. The quilt will be raffled on Nov. 2.
In an effort to raise money for New Kent Historical Society’s scholarship and educational programs fund, a special raffle is scheduled to take place on Nov. 2.
Working with the New Kent Quilters, the society has donated more than 40 photos help with the construction of a unique quilt that displays the history of New Kent County.
The wall hanging quilt’s twenty five panels artistically show photographs of several eras of the county’s history. The quilt measures 39 inches in height and 50 inches in width. Each of the photos were hand-sewned into the 25 panels of the quilt, with each handmade panel telling a story that connects the past to the present.
The county seal, the old courthouse, Martha Washington’s place of birth, the Lanexa School, James Armistead Lafayette, Providence Forge Grist Mill, Olivet Church, St. Peter’s Parish, Cumberland Landing, Chief Cook, Providence Forge old train station, the Vintager Inn Bed and Breakfast, Chief Bradby, and St. Peter’s Parish are among the photographs connecting the past to the present.
Raffle tickets are on sale now through November 1. Tickets are available for purchase at the New Kent Historical Society each Monday from 10 a.m until 2:00 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased from the Rose and Crown Tavern, Heritage Public Library, New Kent Winery, Saude Creek Vineyards, Vintager Inn Bed and Breakfast, and Willie’s Carolina Smokehouse BBQ. To view the quilt, please contact the historical society for details or visit www.newkenthistoricalsoc.com.
The original piece was created by the New Kent Quilters. The quilting bee meets once a month at the Quinton Community Center. The group designs and works on handmade quilts, with results benefiting the community and organizations throughout the county and surrounding communities. Many members of the New Kent Quilters use their own money to purchase the supplies that are needed to make their donated quilts.
Join the New Kent Historical Society and New Kent Quilters for the drawing of the New Kent History Quilt Raffle on Saturday, Nov. 2, 4 p.m. at the Rose and Crown Tavern.
