Groundbreaking for the Charles City Library will take place on Sunday, Apr. 29, 3 p.m. at the site.

Adjacent to the Charles City Courthouse, the ceremony will take place in the field of the new location. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the auditorium of the Charles City School Board and Government administration building.

In November 2015, county citizens voted in favor of a referendum for the county to borrow no more than $2.5 million in funds for the construction of the standalone facility. In County Administrator’s Michelle Johnson’s “State of the County” address in February, she said supervisors had entered into an agreement with David A. Nice Builders Inc. for the facility. In September 2017, Johnson said payments on the new library would not begin until the loan for the current courthouse has been paid off.

The library will also be the home of the Richard M. Bowman Center for Local History. The library hopes to expand hours and become a more accessible commodity for the community and new tenants.
