Lafayette rips New Kent, 62-0

“Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”
That’s Murphy’s Law. And that applies to New Kent’s football encounter with Lafayette’s visiting Rams who punished the Trojans to the tune of 62-0.
Pre-game ceremonies for the Oct. 25 contest featured Senior Night recognition of prospective New Kent graduates participating in fall athletics. Then came kickoff and all went downhill from there. And after the dismal performance, New Kent head coach Dan Rounds declined a post-game interview.
Lafayette scored early, often, and at times when it didn’t own the ball. The Rams were handed six points on an astounding three first half safeties — two for intentional grounding calls against the Trojans in the end zone and one for the ball being snapped over the Trojan punter’s head and through the end zone.
The Rams scored touchdowns on six first half possessions. On the bright side, New Kent forced turnovers on three others with Tyler Jenkins and Terrance Ward pouncing on Ram fumbles and Brandon Martin picking off a Ram pass. But other than R.J. Morris’ 60-yard kickoff return late in quarter two, that was it for New Kent’s highlight reel.
Lafayette’s defense decimated the Trojan ground game that ended with minus-41 yards. New Kent’s passing attack, already crippled by the loss of starting quarterback Luke Mechling to a first quarter shoulder injury, mustered 21 yards. Throw in 15 yards lost on quarterback sacks and the hosts’ yards from scrimmage totaled minus-35.
Lafayette, meanwhile, amassed 377 yards including 286 on the ground. Running back Jahlil Green spearheaded the attack with 157 yards on 16 carries and four touchdowns plus a TD on an interception return.
The outcome lowered New Kent’s record to 2-6.
