Editorial: Challenging Charles City citizens to speak out on all issues

By Robb Johnson | August 22, 2018 10:56 am

What can be done to truly improve Charles City County? This editorial is a challenge to citizens to come out and voice your real concerns. However, the concerns must be constructive, well thought out, and with purpose. The children are suffering and right now that is the most important thing.

Football will not be played at the high school and that makes me upset more than anyone. For as long as I can remember, I always turned on the television and looked at late night news for the Charles City score to scroll along the bottom of the screen, waiting in anticipation to see them win or not.

As of Aug. 22, the season is gone and it’s not coming back this year. What can we do as a community? The writing has been on the wall for years. If you don’t build your county up and don’t spend money correctly, then these are the problems you are going to run into.

When [New Kent County] is next door and building a new Food Lion every year and all you can do is offer a few “Mom and Pop’s” stores, that is unacceptable. Charles City is rich in tradition. Great minds have come form this county and still will in the future.

The bike trial is a nice attraction but it’s not changing the population and enrollment at Charles City schools. It’s not bringing in more jobs either.

There needs to be action in the county, not only from leaders, but from parents and children as well. We must work together because if we don’t, the county that so many of us love will turn into another dead-end drive.

Action needs to start today. Discussing the issues will be a great start. However, when nothing gets done, those words fall on deaf ears.
