‘Otters on the Run’ program off to a successful start

New Kent Parks and Recreation is excited after a successful debut for its “Otters on the Run” program.

The program consist of participants from New Kent Elementary, George Watkins Elementary, and the home school community. The group met for the first time on Dec. 11, with a response of 33 kids, ranging in grades from preschool to fifth.

Jessica Burcham, the mother of two New Kent Elementary School students, helps coordinate the program to spread and encourage all who want to run.

“We’ve seen some awesome improvement with speed and distance from all our members,” said Burcham.

The program received great feedback from the community upon its initiation.

“They have also been able to learn how to cheer on their teammates and learn the fun of being competitive,” continued the coach.

The program grew, thanks to neighboring clubs encouraging them to participate. The group participated in the Sentara Sleighbell 5K with great success for the first year program.

McKenna Mueller finished first in her age group (9 and under) with a time of 26:23, beating out 84 other girls. Other top 10 finishers in their respective age groups were Sofia Foster (9th), Caroline Carter (10th), and Clara Foster (14th). Not to be left out on the fun, Burcham finished second in her age group (30-34) with a time of 22:23. Overall, all members of the otters finished under 54 minutes.

The group would like to thank parents, other running organizations, and all participants in the program.
