School chiefs in New Kent, Charles City stepping down

Searches are expected to be under way soon to find new school superintendents in both New Kent and Charles City counties.

Less than three weeks apart, New Kent school superintendent Rick Richardson and Charles City school superintendent Janet Crawley have said they plan to retire effective next June 30.

Crawley announced her decision following a Dec. 18 closed session with the Charles City School Board. Last night (Wednesday), Richardson followed suit during New Kent School Board’s meeting. Both say the time is right to step down.

Richardson has spent the last five years as New Kent’s superintendent of schools and seven years total in the school system. Among accomplishments under his tenure include navigating strict budgets, transitioning the high school to a four-by-four block schedule, and the opening of Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center.

“Looking at it, it was just the right time,” said Richardson. “I recently took a day off to visit my grandchildren and just began to think about it.”

The outgoing superintendent spoke about the birth of his sixth grandchild, mentioning a picture in his secretary’s office. Richardson already has a few plans upon retirement, especially when it comes to family obligations.

“I am going to spend time with my family,” he continued. “My mother is 98 years old and I want to be able to sit down and spend time with her.”

He added that retirement will mean joining her for breakfast instead of just Sunday visits.

“My wife and I also want to travel,” he continued. “I want to experience those things with her while I’m still in good health.”

In both written and verbal statements, Richardson thanked the community, school boards past and present, his family (especially his wife, Claiborne), and parents for encouragement and allowing him to serve as superintendent.

Crawley, meanwhile, confirmed on Dec. 19 that she will be stepping away from the position after 15 years in the role.

“It’s time,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed working with the children and staff.”

Crawley was no stranger to the Charles City school system before taking on the role of superintendent in 1998. She taught high school English and served stints as high school principal. Now, the veteran with 43 years in education has decided to leave and spend more time with her family.

“I appreciate the opportunities given to me by this school board and the former school boards,” she said. “I wish them the best in the future.”

No timetable has been set by either school board for finding replacements.
