Figuring out which New Kent Trojan baseball team will show up on the field is sort of like a magic eight-ball: You shake and hope that the outcome falls in your favor.

Unfortunately for the hosting Trojans, a flat performance after two straight wins resulted in New Kent’s downfall, this time to Poquoson’s Islanders 10-0 in an Apr. 16 Bay Rivers affair.

Trojan pitcher Nate Kagey was rocked early by patient Islander batters. Poquoson used small-ball, settling for singles on eight of ten hits and swiping bases to frustrate the Trojans and accumulate runs.

Meanwhile, New Kent struggled to get runners on base. In the contest, only four Trojans were able to leave home plate, making in unformidable for the hosts to put up a challenge.

New Kent Head Coach Michael Kuper said that he is hoping to keep his players’ heads high despite the setback.

“I tell these guys that there are ups and downs, peaks and valleys in every season,” he commented. “We have some younger guys, which is no excuse, but we have to maintain our intensity throughout the season.

“We have to bring it every single day,” Kuper added. “We were flat today and that is taking nothing away from Poquoson. We were lackadaisical and we need to regain that focus.”

New Kent falls to an even 4-4 record on the year.
