Box scores can be deceptive at times when reading the results of a sporting event. Such was the case in Monday afternoon’s baseball contest between New Kent and Jamestown.
Despite playing on even terms with the visiting Eagles, the homestanding Trojans had a comeback come to a halt as Jamestown emerged with a 5-3 victory in Monday’s contest.
The Eagles’ Jared Mason received a free pass to home plate after a bases loaded walk in the third inning brought him home to put the guests ahead. In the following frame, two hits and a walk by Jamestown produced three additional runs to provide the guests a 4-0 advantage.
New Kent finally placed a run on the scoreboard after Wyatt Terry’s double and subsequently crossing home plate on a sacrifice base hit. However, the visitors returned the favor with a run in the top of the sixth to keep the gap at four (5-1).
The Trojans’ offense finally sparked in the bottom half of that frame. Two runners crossed home plate to cut the deficit to two by the end of the frame. In the seventh inning, Ellis and Logan Albertson were on base as Nate Kagey stepped up to bat. Kagey’s attempted base knock saw him thrown out at first on a close play, ending the contest.
New Kent Head Coach Michael Kuper discussed his team’s missed opportunities after the loss.
“We had opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of from time to time, whether it was base runners or runners in scoring position,” he said. “We didn’t get in, and it wasn’t for those things, the game could have gone either way.
“The last play was bang-bang at first base and if things were close, then that call could have gone anyway at that point,” Kuper concluded.
New Kent drops to 5-8 on the season.
