Harris wins jumps to lead New Kent Lady Trojans to second place at 3A Region A Championships

New Kent’s Raven Harris emerged as a double-winner in the horizontal jumping events and Julia Hathaway claimed first in the 400-meter dash as New Kent’s Lady Trojans earned a second-place finish at the Group 3A Region A Championships on May 23 at Lakeland High School in Suffolk.

Harris leaped 16’2” in the girls’ long jump to win that event. She followed up that performance by claiming the gold medal in the triple jump with a distance of 35’11½”. Hathaway was able to complete her one-lap race with a time of 1:00.34 to earn the top spot in the 400-meter dash.

The Lady Trojans accumulated 133.5 points, earning the runner-up trophy as Bay Rivers District rival Tabb claimed the meet with a score of 172.5 points. Finishing behind the Lady Trojans were I.C. Norcom (108), York (83), Lakeland (54), Park View of South Hill (39), Booker T. Washington (30), Southampton (10), Phoebus (4), and Petersburg (2).

On the boys’ side, New Kent’s C.J. Reeders won the triple jump while teammate Will Tolley claimed first place in the boys’ pole vault as the Trojans earned the fourth-place spot at the regional meet.

Reeders continued his dominance in the triple jump, easily earning the goal with a leap of 47’2¾”. Tolley earned the first-place finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 12’0”, beating teammate Brandon Bauman via tiebreaker who also cleared the same height.

New Kent accumulated 66 points at the regional meet, finishing behind meet winner Tabb (169), meet host Lakeland (100), and I.C. Norcom (81). Finishing behind the Trojans were Phoebus (53), Booker T. Washington (39), Hopewell (34), York (33), Park View of South Hill (28), Southampton (28), Petersburg (16), and Colonial Heights (10).
