A message continues to be sent by New Kent’s football team: A one-time trip to the playoffs isn’t enough.

The Trojans continued to roll early on in the 2019 season, shutting out Bruton 42-0 in the Sept. 13 Bay Rivers District.

New Kent wasted little time behind a punishing running game. Logan Powell scored on a five-yard dash less than two minutes into contest to put the hosts up 7-0. On the next series, quarterback Wade Grubbs connected with Adam Cable on a screen pass, resulting in a 21-yard reception and escort into the end zone for the next score. After a botched punt by Bruton, Cable once again trotted into for a touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter, resulting in a huge advantage for the hosts.

The offensive firepower for the Trojans continued, with Grubbs connecting with Joey Campbell who snagged a beautiful one-handed touchdown grab from 22 yards out for another score. From that point, New Kent had little trouble with the visitors’ offense, keeping Bruton from the scoring column.

Trojan head coach John Fulks talked about working on the team’s progress as the tougher schedule begins to head New Kent’s way.

“We have to work on a little bit of everything,” he said. “Last year, Warhill beat us soundly and they are solid on both sides of the ball.

“That’s a game that we have had on the schedule and been looking at since they ended our regular season with a loss last year,” Fulks continued. “It will be our first real test and we are going to come out and see how we can defend their offense and hopefully find some weaknesses.”

New Kent improves to 2-0 on the year.
