Charles City Lady Panthers were unable to hold onto a three-run lead, as the visiting Surry County Lady Cougars rallied for a 13-4 win during the March 21 contest.

After the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the first frame, the Lady Panthers’ bats came alive. Freshman Veondra Brown blasted a solo home run to left field to tie the game (1-1). Mary Black’s single drove in teammate Raven Christian and was followed by Black stealing home. Sydney Richard also singled, driving home teammate Ke’Ara Jones to give the hosts a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the third.

But that would be the last of the lead the Lady Panthers would see. Surry’s Alexis Cornick singled and Kandice Jones doubled to spark a seven-run frame to return the lead to the guests. Charles City struggled at the plate for the remainder of the game thanks to Surry pitcher Katelyn Spiers striking out seven of the remaining nine batters.

Charles City fell to 0-2 on the season.
