New Kent Lady Trojans place second at Group 3A Region A track championships

New Kent’s Lady Trojans track and field team finished as runners-up at the Group 3A Region A Track and Field Championship held on June 10 held at Lakeland High School.

Lady Trojan Julia Hathaway emerged with the top spot in the girls’ triple jump, emerging victorious with a distance of 33’6½”. Teammate Sierrah Matthews was able edge out Booker T. Washington’s Swayne Clennon to win the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.84.

The Lady Trojans scored 128 points at the meet. They finished behind Bay Rivers District rival and meet winner Tabb (164) and ahead of Bay Rivers District rival York (82), who finished in third.

On the boys’ side, New Kent’s Trojans accumulated 61.5 points, earning a fourth-place finish as the regional competition.

Trojan leaper Isaac Barber easily claimed the boys’ long jump competition, going a distance of 21’11” to win by nearly a foot in the competition.

The Trojans finished behind Bay Rivers District rivals Tabb (166) and Lafayette (110), who finished first and second respectively at the regional competition. Hopewell squeezed in front of New Kent for third with 67.5 points.

New Kent’s athletes and relay teams finishing in the top four of their respective events will participate in the Group 3A State Championship on June 18 at Liberty University.
