Barber snags silver medal in boys’ long jump at Group 3A state championship meet
New Kent Class of 2021 valedictorian and track and field standout Isaac Barber finished second in the boys’ long jump competition at the Group 3A State Championships Friday afternoon at Liberty University.
Barber garnered a mark of 21’4¾” to win the silver medal at the competition. He also won a medal in the boys’ triple jump, finishing in fifth place with a leap of 42’7¼.” Barber was joined by teammates Aaron Sweeney, Markus Sydnor, and Aaron Walker in the 4×100 relay, earning a medal by finishing seventh in the event with a time of 44.89.
New Kent’s boys team scored 14 points, finishing 22nd in the state competition. Western Albermarle took home the team trophy in the meet by scoring 57 points.
On the Lady Trojans side, Sierrah Matthews ran a time of 59.29 in the 400-meter dash to finish as the team’s top performer at the state meet.
Matthews earned additional points in the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh with a time of 26.06. She was joined by Tabitha Gill, Lauren Walker, and Jakeira Thomas in the 4×400 meter relay, finishing seventh with a time of 4:24.01.
Other point accumulators for New Kent were Julia Hathaway in the 100-meter dash (7th-12.69) and triple jump (8th-33’5”), and Kori Massey in the high jump (8th- 4’8”).
The Lady Trojans totaled 12.5 points, finishing 16th in the state competition. Heritage of Lynchburg emerged as the meet champion with 74 points.
