A man who robbed Adkins Store in Charles City County has entered guilty pleas to multiple felony counts.
Michael Robert Deremer II, 30, of the 7400 block of Lewis Tyler Lane, Charles City, entered guilty pleas to two counts each of burglary and petty larceny (third or subsequent offense). Two counts of misdemeanor destruction of property and one additional charge each of burglary and petty larceny (third of subsequent offense) were dropped as part of a plea agreement.
In a summary of evidence provided by Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler, on Dec. 28, 2020, police officers responded to an overnight break-in of the store where the side window was destroyed. During that break-in, approximately $200 in cash was stolen. Video surveillance of that crime showed a Lexus SUV driving away from the scene but later returning as the suspect retrieved a glove that they had dropped. Less than a month later on Jan. 19, 2021, another burglary took place at Adkins Store, this time with the front window smashed in. Video showed the suspect stealing more cash from the register and cigarettes.
Charles City deputies tracked down the vehicle that was seen on surveillance and linked it to Deremer. When questioned about the crime, Deremer cooperated and said that he was the one who committed the offenses. A search of Deremer’s residence discovered a glove similar to the ones that were seen in video footage and that the suspect had retreated to collect.
As part of the agreement, formal sentencing for Deremer is scheduled for Sept. 7. No length of active incarceration was set as part of his plea deal, but he must pay $1,500 in restitution.
