Editorial: Social media and how it hinders our society

By Robb Johnson | September 22, 2021 12:09 am

Social media can provide a false reality in today’s world. It can break an individual or an entire community at times.

When we look at the influences of social media on the Internet, they can bring up good things such as businesses closer to consumers to promote local businesses. They can also help people stay in touch with each other when there aren’t other ways to do so.

But there are downsides as well. We have so many people that are obsessed with social media fame. The cost of that fame can cost a person. There is nothing wrong with having a social media page and having fun.

However, the internet has gotten to the point where people take things too far. Posing with guns, throwing up gang signs, and acting out of character is just the beginning. We have women under the illusion that a big butt and bust are the only ways to feel beautiful when it’s far from the truth. We have people posting their actual locations when bad-mouthing others. We have people putting every little thing they do on the internet, with some even doing illegal things, all while being watched by viewers.

Social media has also made it faster for the evil to expose their plans. School shootings and bomb threats are now an example of this and that’s a problem. Social media has provided so much good, but the downside has far been worse in my opinion. It has literally hurt us as a society, and most people can’t go a day without it.

There was a time when we could communicate with the use of social media. During those times, people would get together and do things. Now, the advances in technology have made us lazier and gives us an excuse not to be in the presence of others. Human interaction is healthy, and with the studies about mental health, this should be common sense.

The bottom line is that social media overall has hurt society. I feel that we all need to make a commitment to stay off it at least one or two days a week, if not more. It is not the end of everything, and that is okay.

Too much of anything can become a problem. I feel that the influence of social media has gotten the sad reality and we all need to take responsibility to fix this problem.
