Letter to the Editor: The old and young need to work together for the future

Unfortunately, some youth are addicted to cell phones.

The trivial application of the device for games and sometimes prolonged, trifling chit chat benefit from the youth. The phone is keeping the brain active and polishing the important ability to socialize. However, constant game playing and long, drawn out gabbing are largely unproductive.

For a nation plagued by COVID-19, environmental disasters, and more, the significance of these might well be stressed to you so they realize what they will face as adults. Everyone needs fun and recreation for a balanced lifestyle, but learning the truth about vital issues and being serious about solving them. Old and young need to act as a team to vigorously attack crucial problems and not be complacent or content to live with them. Old people setting examples for youth is not enough. Let’s go to the next level, choosing worthwhile purposes in life, and cooperatively pursuing them until we die.

How can we choose worthwhile purposes for our lives? A prerequisite to this is to choose the highest moral code to govern our behavior. Each of us has to identify our human characteristics. We share the air we breathe, the sun which energizes our planet, and genetic material which makes us human. Given that we share the same fate, why do we lack compassion, kindness, love, and forgiveness?

Religion, politics, and misinformation often tend to set people against each other. If we could put a lot of that stuff to bed and unite in striving to find, choose, and pursue real purposes, the world would be a better place.
