West Point man succumbs from injuries sustained in New Kent car crash on New Year’s Eve

An accident on Eltham Road (Route 33) in New Kent on New Year’s Eve has resulted in the death of a West Point man.

According to the Virginia State Police, at 2:44 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2021, officers responded to a single vehicle crash on Eltham Road approximately one mile north of New Kent Highway (Rt. 249). A preliminary investigation reveals that a 2014 Mercedes E-Class was traveling east on Eltham Road when it ran into the grassy median, lost control and struck a tree.

The driver, identified as Yehia M. Shawky-Mahmoud, 70, was transported to VCU Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Shawky-Mahmoud was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
