One of the wishes that New Kent Lady Trojans’ head basketball coach wished for Christmas was for his team to play better defense. Apparently Santa Claus not only heard that desire, but also threw in a few extra presents.
Behind seven three-pointers and a 30-point performance from McKenna Mueller, New Kent Lady Trojans coasted to a 57-26 victory over the Jamestown Lady Eagles in the Jan. 6 Bay Rivers District match-up to kick off the new year.
After falling behind 4-0 to the winless eagles, New Kent quickly reversed the pace of the game. The hosts tied the game up at seven apiece after Katelyn Norman’s jumper. From there, it was Mueller’s show on the floor.
Two trifectas at the end of the first sparked a 10-0 run for the Lady Trojans to take a 17-7 lead heading into the second quarter. With defensive pressure slowing Jamestown down, Mueller drained two more three-pointers while Norman cleaned up any misses with putbacks. The result was a 36-13 halftime lead for the hosts. From there, the Lady Trojans paced themselves to seal the win to kick off 2022.
After the game, Burson applauded the improved defensive effort by his team.
“Our defense, last game, was poor, and there wasn’t much effort,” he said. “We saw the results of that game.
“Tonight was a good showing of defense,” Burson continued. “The players played together and trusted one another, and when we share the ball, it’s fun to watch. It builds a rapport, and it looks better.”
Along with Mueller’s scoring output, Norman also finished in double figures with 15 points for New Kent, whose record improves to 6-3. Hannah Drewer pumped in six, Aubrey Hyndshaw tossed in four, and Darian Mason chipped in with two.
