It’s been six years since Charles City High School fielded a softball team. And with new faces in place, no seniors on the team, and talent waiting to be groom, the Lady Panthers welcomed hosted Sussex Central in Monday afternoon’s affair.
The Lady Panthers put together a respectable outing, but fell to the visiting Lady Tigers 22-8 during their home opener.
Charles City gained their first lead of the game in the bottom of first when Lady Panther Kaelynn Spencer stole home to put the hosts up on top.
But in the top of the second, the visitors began figuring out the pitching style of Charles City hurler Janiya Washington. Sussex converted on 11 straight runs to widen the gap.
Charles City battled back valiantly, as Washington made amends by reaching base and adding a sacrifice to add another score. But the deficit was too much to overcome, as the hosts could not conquer the Tigers.
After the game, Charles City Lady Panthers Head Coach Karen Burcham sang praise for her team who fought hard to the end.
“These girls did amazing,” she commented. “I have been with them since the start of the season and I continue to see improvement.
“We are working on pitching and to see Taniyah Williams come in for her first time pitching, she did a great job. They are learning the game and each other.”
Charles City’s record falls to 0-2 on the season.
