With their undefeated record on the line, New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ soccer team welcomed the visiting Woodside Lady Wolverines in an Apr. 13 non-district affair that looked to test the legitimacy of their record. New Kent proved that their season so far was not a fluke.

The hosting Lady Trojans captured an impressive 2-0 victory over Woodside, keeping their record unblemished at 6-0.

Both teams brought their physical style of play to the pitch. Woodside’s defensive pressure did not allow New Kent to reach their side of the field for a majority of the first half. But when the Lady Trojans did, they took advantage of it.

With 3:21 remaining in the opening half, New Kent’s Mea Picone long distance strike left Woodside goalkeeper Ezra Kleinfeldt unable to move as the hosts took a 1-0 lead. The hosts carried that lead into the halftime intermission.

In the second half, New Kent’s defense continued to stifle the visitors at every turn. Woodside continued to attack the goal but failed to convert any for points. However, the Lady Wolverines’ defense also did the same, making the hosts’ job to score tough as well.

The Lady Trojans found the breathing room they needed in the final two minutes of the game. An insurance score from Michelle Drake doubled the home team’s advantage and closed out the contest.

After the game, New Kent Lady Trojans’ head coach Steve Grech talked about his team’s masterful effort.

“In the second half, I made changes as we were getting beat at the wing on the right side,” he said, complimenting his team’s adjustments on the field. “They had some big girls that were knocking us down, but our girls fought to the end, and I am really proud of the way they stepped up today.”
