New Kent’s Trojans’ baseball team continues its dominance, this time courtesy of a surprise from a new pitcher.

Sophomore Thomas Wilson commanded the mound as the Trojans defeated Jamestown 4-0 in the Apr. 21 contest.

Following a philosophy all year of pitching very well, play defense, and then everything will fall into place, the affair against the visiting Eagles was a case of following the plan. Holding a slim 1-0 lead in the third inning, New Kent faced adversity as Jamestown had runners in scoring position.

A wild pitch by Wilson provided Jamestown a chance to get to home plate. However, catcher Brayden Heath was able to flip the ball to Wilson, who applied the tag to Bowman Basic for the out and kept the Trojans’ lead intact.

The defensive play swung momentum from Jamestown to New Kent, as in the bottom of the third Joe Buchman’s RBI double brought in two runs. An added run late in the game provided the Trojans additional breathing room as they closed out the contest.

After the game, New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan was excited to talk about the Trojans’ defense.

“The play at the plate was great and Thomas [Wilson] threw a lot of strikes,” the coach said. “That is all I can ask for and we practice like that all the time.

“We have what it takes to do big things and we are coming together as a team,” Ronan concluded.

New Kent improves to 9-1 on the year.
