Trio of Lady Panthers lead Charles City’s charge to third place finish at district track meet

If the May 19 Tidewater District track meet was an indication for the future, Charles City’s Lady Panthers Track and Field team could be a threat to competition next year.
Behind the performance from juniors Nevaeh Coney, Janiya Washington, and Surayyah Tinsley, the trio of Lady Panthers powered Charles City to a third-place finish overall among seven teams on their home track.
Coney emerged victorious in the girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 1:09.63, while teammate Washington finished right behind her at 1:09.76. Coney leaped 32’9” in the girls’ triple jump, placing second and automatically qualifying her for the Group 1A State Championships in June. In addition, Coney picked up a second-place finish in the girls’ long jump (14’9”) and a third-place finish in the girls’ 200-meter dash (30.30).
In addition to her second-place finish in the 400-meter dash, Washington also earned silver medals in the 100-meter dash (13.65) and the 200-meter dash (29.42). She also qualified for the regional competition in the girls’ triple jump, finishing fourth with a mark of 30’3”. Tinsley earned postseason trips in both sets of hurdles, finishing as runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles (58.13) and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (21.96).
Charles City’s Lady Panthers scored 76 points, earning the bronze overall. West Point won the girls’ portion with 109 points, with Mathews finishing second (88) points.
On the boys’ side, Ashton English accounted for the Panther points as he finished fifth in the boys’ shot. English tossed a distance of 33’4” to account for Charles City’s scoring.
Charles City’s boys’ finished seventh at the district meet. West Point boys’ won the meet with 197 points, with Mathews finishing second with 90 points and King William placing third with 85 points.
Charles City is scheduled to host the Group 1A Region A Championship Track Meet on May 26.
