With a team loaded with members of the Class of 2022, New Kent’s baseball squad went through the struggles of hiccups early in their high school careers. Friday night showed that sticking with each other along with improvement can result in great achievements.
New Kent’s Trojans toppled the Smithfield Packers 6-2 in Friday afternoon’s baseball contest, capturing the Bay Rivers District regular season championship on Senior Night.
The hosting Trojans got into the groove early in the bottom of the first. Jack Swynford’s triple plus a stolen base on a wild pitch provided New Kent a 1-0 advantage.
But after a strong start from Trojan hurler Nick Redman, Smithfield began deciphering his pitches and pushing two runs across the place to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. However, the Trojans did not yield, with Swynford once again stealing home plate successfully, tying the game up.
After a Packer infield error, Brayden Heath’s RBI single returned the advantage to the hosts. Three more runs by New Kent provided the hosts a 6-2 lead by the bottom of the fourth, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
When the game concluded, New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan talked about what was in store for his team as they locked up home field advantage in the Region 3A tournament.
“We want to take things game by game and hope for the best,” the victorious coach commented. “I am very confident in this team, and I told them from the start that I felt that we had a special team. Right now, our record is showing that.”
New Kent concludes its regular season with a 17-2 record.
