George Wallace Fisher

George Wallace Fisher, a life-long resident of New Kent County, passed away on Sept. 6, 2022 at the age of 87.

George was born in Richmond, Virginia, on July 23, 1935, to the late Hugh Pearson and Alice Fisher Moore. He graduated from New Kent High School and furthered his education by attending and graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1958 with a major in agronomy. While in college, he was in the Corp of Cadets, graduating as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force and was stationed in Texas. He enjoyed watching Virginia Tech football games on television and remained a Hokie Fan.

George had a great affection for “Ashland Farm”, a 200-acre farm owned and operated by his father in New Kent where he grew up. An outdoorsman at heart, he left his job in Richmond working for the State Department of Agriculture and joined his father on the farm. George loved the land and wide-open spaces and disliked acres of rural land being lost to development.

George served the Colonial Soil and Water Conservation District from 2000 to 2006 and was on the U.S.D.A. Farm Service Agency County Committee from 1968 to 1972 and from 1987 to 2006. He was honored by the Charles City and New Kent Corn Club for having the highest yield for 1971, setting a club record by producing 1898.54 bushels of corn per acre. Among his pastimes include growing a vegetable garden, sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors, and attending his son’s baseball games.

George had an unwavering cheerful disposition and greeted everyone with a smile. He is remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his integrity, his thoughtfulness, and his devotion to his family. He passed away at home on the farm that he dearly loved.

George was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra Chadwell Fisher; three sisters, Ella Mae Johnson, Frances Martin, and Harriet Minor Fisher; and brother, Dr. Hugh P. Fisher Jr.

He is survived by his devoted son, George Wallace Fisher Jr.; a sister, Mabel Fisher Ward; a special niece, Harriet Ward Gavin; along with many loving nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A service was held at Providence United Methodist Church, 4001 New Kent Highway, Quinton, Virginia. Memorial gifts may be made to Quinton Fire and EMS or Providence United Methodist Church Memorial Association.

The family is appreciative of the excellent care provided by the Hospice of Virginia during George’s final months. Tributes may be posted at www.vincentfh.com.
