New Kent’s Lady Trojans have dealt with adversity throughout the 2022-23 season. And with the Feb. 2 Senior Night contest against the visiting Warhill Lady Lions, their effort fell short to close out the home regular slate.
Warhill opened up with a strong first quarter en route to a 57-27 Bay Rivers District victory over the Lady Trojans.
The visitors didn’t hold back as they utilized transition baskets and easy scores to open the game. Warhill’s offense orchestrated 19 first quarter points. By contrast, New Kent was only able to toss in four. The second quarter saw another 16 from Warhill, who took a 35-10 lead into the intermission break courtesy of D’Shlea Walker’s 21 first half points. From there, the Lady Lions had no issues closing out the contest.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Neko Burson reflected on the season and his passion for his team.
“Early on, we had some obvious hills to climb and we continued to climb,” he said. “Some days we took big strides and other days smaller ones, but we like to find positive things every day in every game.”
From there, Burson praised his senior class and their contributions to a program that has seen both regional and state appearances.
“This group has been around a lot of success and they were able to come in and be the model that other players need,” Burson added. “I highly appreciate that about them, and they are fighters, even when things got tough.”
New Kent (7-15) received a game high 16 from Aubrey Hyndshaw. Alline Alexander tossed in five, Hannah Milby pitched in with four, and Evie Davenport chipped in with two.
