Letter to the Editor: Touts Ecimovic’s accomplishments as New Kent Commissioner of Revenue
On June 20, a primary will be held to determine who will represent the Republican Party in the Fall election for Commissioner of Revenue. The two candidates are Laura M. Ecimovic and Terry K. Cornelius.
Traditionally, New Kent County has voted Republican and whoever wins this primary is likely to become our next Commissioner of Revenue in the Fall election. So, why is this primary vote so important and what does it mean to the citizens of New Kent?
It is important because approximately 74 percent of county funds are assessed or processed by the Commissioner of Revenue’s office. It is an enormous responsibility to handle. Get the assessments and projections wrong and the entire county suffers. If assessments are understated, the county will not have sufficient resources for schools, economic development, law enforcement, social services, and fire. Any overstatements in assessments will be reflected in the real estate and personal property bills citizens receive in the Fall. Incorrect assessments could impact your availability to sell or refinance a home. In this office, experience maters and you must have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the job.
I retired from the county on Apr. 1, 2022. During my tenure, I worked in the finance office and participated in the annual budget process. I worked with Laura Ecimovic for 11 years and I know her to be a consummate professional who is extremely skilled and knowledgeable. She was a trusted partner in the budget process, and we relied on her assessments and revenue estimates. As a manager, Laura insists on professionalism and excellent customer service at every level. She has 20 years of experience as a licensed appraiser.
How you vote is your call, but please consider the importance of this position and qualifications of the candidates.
