Third assault on family members puts Providence Forge man in jail for two years
A Providence Forge man will spend two years in jail stemming from an assault and battery attack on a family member following formal sentencing Monday in New Kent Circuit Court.
Harlan Egan Adkins, 52, of the 4700 block of Adkins Road, was sentenced to five years in jail with three years suspended on an assault and battery of a family member (third or subsequent offense) during proceedings stemming from an Oct. 6, 2022 incident. All five years on an attempted strangulation conviction were suspended.
During an Apr. 17 trial, Adkins entered straight guilty pleas to the aforementioned charges. During that trial, evidence presented showed that Adkins had gotten into a domestic dispute at a residence on Riverside Drive where he was house-sitting. Adkins made suicidal threats which led to the confrontation by family members to check on his well-being. When family members arrived, the defendant became irate and charged at one of the victims, knocking them over. He proceeded to attempt to strangle another victim before authorities were called. After receiving information about the incident, Adkins was arrested.
During his sentencing, Adkins admitted that he had an alcohol problem and that he doesn’t recount the actions of that day. However, New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick pointed to the criminal history of Adkins which included six assaults and two strangulations previously. That information was enough for Judge B. Elliott Bondurant to sentence Adkins to two years of incarceration.
In other circuit court matters:
–Anthony Tyrone Adams, 34, of the 4300 block of Victoria Boulevard, Hampton, entered guilty pleas to one count each of felony child abuse and misdemeanor reckless driving.
In a summary of evidence, on Jan. 14 at 1:50 a.m., a Virginia State Trooper clocked a vehicle traveling westbound on Interstate 64 going 100 miles per hour in a posted 65-miles per hour zone. The officer began to give chase, eventually clocking the vehicle maxing out at 126 miles per hour before a traffic stop was executed. As the officer approached the vehicle, they noticed a child sitting in the back seat of vehicle. The officer spoke to the driver, now identified as Adams, about his speed. Adams told the officer that he was trying to get to Pennsylvania to see a dying relative. The excessive speed along with the underage child in the vehicle was enough to have the officer arrest the defendant.
Under the plea agreement, a presentence report is being prepared. As part of the agreement, defense attorney Michael Hyman will have an opportunity to argue on behalf of Adams at sentencing to reduce his felony child abuse charge down to a misdemeanor prior to sentencing. Formal sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 18.

Bowe told the officer he had a bottle with pills in it. The pills were sent off to a forensics lab and came back as methamphetamine.
Under the plea deal, Bowe will be placed in the First Offender Program where he has to complete a drug rehabilitation course as well as other requirements that include community service. If he successfully completes all the requirements, the possession charge will be dismissed.

When the officer approached the vehicle, they noticed the driver unconscious while the car was still in gear. The officer put the car in park and provided Narcan to the driver, later identified as Thompson, to revive him. Once revived, the officer questioned Thompson on what happened. After noticing signs of impairment, a field sobriety test was conducted with the defendant failing it. After placing Thompson in custody, a search of the vehicle discovered cocaine inside of the vehicle.
Under the agreement, the possession of a Schedule I/II drug conviction will be dismissed if the defendant completes the Starfish in-patient drug rehabilitation program that lasts approximately six months. Thompson received a 12-month sentence with all but one suspended on the misdemeanor DUI conviction. He must also pay a total of $300 in fines.

The deputy was able to observe three cut straws with white powder in plain sight and took White into custody on suspicion of possessing an illegal substance. A lab report confirmed the officer’s suspicions, as the item was deemed to be cocaine.
