Letter to the Editor: One year of 988 has saved lives

On July 16, it will mark one year since our nation transitioned to 988, the easy-to-remember nationwide mental health crisis helpline. This number connects callers with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline).

Since the launch of 988 in 2022, data shows an increase in overall calls, texts, and chats. More people are getting connected to care and connected sooner than ever before.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 9,360 people use 988 every day. Of that number, 98 percent of people are helped during the call, text, or chat by a trained counselor, resources are shared, and community connections are made without the involvement of 911. About one percent have their crisis counselor call 911, while less than one percent have the crisis counselor call 911 without consent due to being in serious risk to life.

If someone is experiencing an emotional crisis of suicide, call 988 or seek help at a licensed behavior health facility.
