New Kent School Board receives overhaul; District 2 New Kent supervisor seat battle remains close
New Kent County’s School Board will receive an entire overhaul according to preliminary results from the New Kent General Election Tuesday night.
Newcomers Keith Pagano (District 1), Helena Cunha (District 2), Heather Donbrosky (District 3), Ron Vaught (District 4), and Gregory Reimer (District 5) have all earned spots on New Kent’s School Board for the next term.
While Pagano was unchallenged for his seat, Cunha had to defeat Kelly Martin and Elizabeth Remorenko to capture the spot being vacated by Kristen Swynford. Donbrosky defeated incumbent Andrea Staskiel and Reimer knocked off incumbent Molly McBeath and Mia Pollard. In District 4, Vaught defeated incumbent Sarah Grier-Barber at the time of this release, but with a differential of 54 votes, a recount may be warranted.
A recount may also be triggered in the battle for the District 2 Board of Supervisors seat as well. With Tommy Tiller electing not to seek re-election, John Moyer and Donald Westbrock vied for the seat. As of press time, Moyer leads Westbrock by 26 votes (874-848).
In other battles for seats to county leadership, incumbents Thomas Evelyn (District 1), Patricia Paige (District 3), and Ron Stiers (District 4) all retained their seats. Evelyn defeated challenger Mark Daniel, while Paige won after challenger Bruce Howard withdrew. Stiers also went unchallenged.
The only change that occurred on the county’s board of supervisors came in District 5. Newcomer Jordan Stewart defeated incumbent John Lockwood to take over the seat in the upcoming cycle.
In the only county-wide contest in this election, incumbent Amy Crump retained her position as Clerk of Circuit Court with a comfortable win over challenger Rachel Mills. Other district-wide winners include Edward Davis and Philip Thomson (Directors of Soil and Water Conservation), Laura Ecimovic (Commissioner of the Revenue), Lee Bailey (Sheriff), Scott Renick (Commonwealth’s Attorney), and Charles Evelyn III (Treasurer).
In battles at the state level, Amanda Batten defeated Jessica Anderson for the 71st seat in the House of Delegates, while Scott Wyatt had no problems with challenger Keith Braxton for the 60th seat in the House of Delegates. Ryan McDougle also emerged victorious, capturing the 26th Senate Seat by defeating Pamela Garner.
Currently, all results are unofficial, especially with close races for the District 4 School Board and District 2 Board of Supervisors. Any update will be posted on our website, www.nkccnews.com and also printed in an upcoming edition of the Chronicle.
Approximately 12,223 ballots, or 63 percent of registered voters, participated in the New Kent General Election.
